Summer Home Maintenance Checklist

Summer has just arrived and since we’re all still stuck at home (COVID-19), we thought of giving you a handy checklist to keep your home in prime working condition. Seasonal home maintenance is important for preventing breakdowns, saving money, and keeping your home looking its best. Revisiting this list monthly will keep your maintenance schedule on track and easier to manage. If any of the jobs go beyond your skill level or lead to more involved repairs, consider hiring professional help.

Interior

  • Catch some rays while cleaning your windows
  • Change your ice maker filter
  • Clean and lubricate your window channels
  • Search for mold (gray or black blotches)

Exterior

  • Inspect and clean your grill
  • Check the house for loose or rotted siding
  • Reseal your driveway
  • Fill cracks in your patio and sidewalks

Insulation and Ventilation

  • Check vents for birds, squirrels or other pests
  • Check your attic for proper insulation
  • Clean and test your dehumidifier
  • Clean your dryer vent

Roof

  • Check your roof for damage or missing shingles
  • Trim branches and trees away from the roof

Structure

  • Keep fertilizer/power tools out of children’s reach
  • Reseal your garage floor
  • Check your crawl space for moisture
  • Remove combustible materials from the garage

Electrical Systems

  • Check your wiring and cables for wear and damage
  • Test and reset your GFCI and AFCI outlets/breakers

Water Control

  • Pour water into your sump to test the pump
  • Clean your gutters and window wells
  • Extend downspouts away from your foundation
  • Make sure grading flows water away

HVAC

  • Change your filters
  • Hire an HVAC contractor to service your system

Fuel Services

  • Check your gas/oil tank for odors and leaks

Plumbing

  • Check all fixtures for leaks
  • Check tile joints, grout and caulking
  • Clean your exterior drains, e.g. stairwell
  • Get your drinking water tested (well potability)

Property

  • Trim shrubs and plants away from HVAC units
  • Check your property for pests – ants, termites, bees
  • Save energy – install a clothesline!
